Live stock:

Sheep: ½ acre apiece for grazing, cannot overlap with cattle. Sheep need about 8 lbs of dry matter per day.  For healthy rumen function, and to avoid rumen damage from acidosis or grain overload, a ewe needs to eat about 1.5 to 2 pounds of forage a day. Feeding some hay or grain will reduce the pressure on pastures, although when faced with the choice between old dry hay and new grass, ewes tend to leave the hay and graze the grass to its roots

  • Cows  Cows are ruminants or cud-chewing animals eating hay, corn, soybeans, grass, wheat, and ensilage. Each cow eats 20 to 25 pounds of grain, 40 to 60 pounds of ensilage, 30 pounds of hay and drinks about 15 to 25 gallons of water a day.

Or....Cattle will normally consume 1.4 to 4.0% of their body weight daily depending upon the quality of feed:

  • Cows will consume between 1.8% and 2% of their body weight on a dry basis of a low quality feed.
  • Cows will consume between 2.0% and 2.2% of their body weight on a dry basis of an average quality feed.
  • Cows will consume between 2.2% and 2.5% ( during lactation it may be as high as 2.7%) of their body weight on a dry basis of a high quality feed. (University of Nebraska, Beef Cattle Production website.

Chickens:  Eat about 1/3 to ¼ pound of feed a day. Grains and "scratch"

Crop production

Fertilizer: Approximately 22lbs per acre. http://www.nrcs.usda.gov/technical/NRI/pubs/ib7text.html#table2

Corn: In 2006, Iowa corn farmers grew alomst 2.1 billion bushels of corn on 12.4 million acres of land. In 2007 they harvested more than 2.5 billion bushels on a record breaking 13.9 million acres. In 2007, Iowa corn growers harvested an average of 182 bushels per acre. A bushel began as a measure of volume, but the accepted standard for a bushel of corn is now measured in weight: 56 pounds. That's for shelled corn (after the husks and cobs are removed). It is about the size of a large bag of dog food. http://www.iowacorn.org/cms/en/CornEducation/FAQ/Faq.aspx

Wheat: average 53 - 70 bushels per acre

Hay: 2.05 tons per acre.
