TWO DAVIDSON'S MERIT-BASED SCHOLARSHIPS

THE BELK SCHOLARSHIP

 

The John Montgomery Belk Scholarship is Davidson's most prestigious merit-based program.  Covering the comprehensive costs of attending Davidson (room, board, tuition and fees), the Belk Scholarship is valued at over $49,000 in 2011-12.


Belk Scholars are those students whose

outstanding intellectual ability and success, leadership experience, commitment to service and overall personal vigor mark them as those who will accomplish much and contribute most to the Davidson community and in their lives beyond their college years.

 

Each school may nominate one Belk Scholarship candidate, no later than November 10, 2011.

Nominees' admission applications must be completed and received in our office no later than 5:00 p.m., December 1, 2011.

THE BRYAN SCHOLARSHIP

 

The Lowell Bryan Scholarship program offers awards, each valued at $30,000 annually, to two scholar-athletes (one woman and one man) in each entering class.

 

Candidates are chosen on the basis of:

¨       academic and personal excellence, 

¨       strong promise of significant impact in their classes and in their lives on campus,

¨       potential for significant success in Davidson's NCAA Division I athletic program

 

Each school may nominate up to three candidates for the Bryan Scholarship.  The nomination deadline is September 23. Students may also be nominated by Davidson coaches of the 18 eligible sports (football, and men's and women's basketball are not eligible).  (Visit www.davidson.edu/Bryan for details.)

 

Nominees' admission applications must be completed and received in our office no later than

5:00 p.m., October 15, 2011.

 

Finalists will participate in selection interviews on campus on November 6-7, 2011.

THE 2011 COLORED ROCKS PRIZE

(A Community Based Essay Competition)
For Young Men of Color

15 Prizes will be awarded ranging from $3,500 (First Place) to $50 (Honorable Mention). Prizes DO NOT have to be used for college. You can use the money for anything you want!

The competition is open to male students of color who have completed their junior year in high school and who expect to be seniors graduating in 2012.
  • Students must be attending a high school in Georgia.                  
  • We will begin accepting entries in June 2011. Prize winners will be announced in September 2011.
 Students must submit the following to enter the competition:
  1. Your essay answer to "The Question" (the question will be announced once the contest opens), AND
  2. Your plan to complete a project in your community based on your essay.

The Mary Ware Scholarship Fund provides financial grants to attend Georgia's
institutions for higher learning. These grants will go to deserving Georgia High School
graduates. The focus is on children who are "at risk" and have a strong financial need.
Applicant Requirements
The applicant must:
 Be a US citizen
 Be a Georgia resident and attending a Georgia educational facility for 24
consecutive months at the time of submitting application
 Be a graduating senior in a public school, home school or be actively achieving
their GED with a May graduation
 Be preparing to attend college, university, vocational or technical school full time
in the state of Georgia, in the year of the submitted application
 Submit the application and supporting documents by June 15, 2011
 Not be related to anyone employed by Foster Care Support Foundation or the
Mary Ware family
 Not be a recipient of another scholarship offering full financial support
 Show positive impact involvement shown through letters of recommendation and
past work/volunteer experience
 Show need for financial assistance.

Georgia Perimeter Colleget he Bonner Leaders Program.

Georgia Perimeter College has a new scholarship opportunity for incoming students: the Bonner Leaders Program. Scholarship participants will receive over $5,000 in educational support over five semesters. Currently, there are 10 scholarships available. The application deadline is Friday, June 3, 2011

Beginning fall 2011, we will implement the Bonner Leaders Program (BLP). The BLP is a five-semester, financial need-based, community engagement scholarship that provides students with access to education and an opportunity to serve. Scholarships are awarded to graduating high school students who (1) have been engaged in their communities or who have taken on significant family responsibilities and (2) want to continue or expand their community-based service during college.  

Scholarship participants will receive over $5,000 in educational support:

·         $2,500 over 5 semesters, which can be applied to tuition, fees, and related expenses. Awards are disbursed at the beginning of each semester and are contingent upon completion of the previous semester's requirements.

·        $8.00/hr for Federal Work Study (FWS placements are contingent upon student eligibility and placement availability.)

·        $2,200 total AmeriCorps Educational Awards (Educational awards are contingent upon student eligibility and federal funding.) Awards will be released to students upon completion of program requirements. Awards are good for seven years and may be used to pay current or future educational expenses or to pay off student loans.

 

Ideal candidates will:

·         Graduate high school spring 2011

·        Have a cumulative high school GPA of 2.5 or higher 

·        Be eligible to file the FAFSA

o       All students wishing to receive federally-funded financial assistance must complete a Free Application for Student Federal Aid. For more information on eligibility requirements, see: http://www.fsa4counselors.ed.gov/PORTALSWebApp/cotw/main.jsp. To qualify for the Bonner Leaders Program, student must also qualify to file a FAFSA. 

·        Have an EFC of $7,500 or less

o       After a student files his/her FAFSA, the federal government will assign him/her an Estimated Family Contribution. This is the monetary amount that the federal government estimates a student and his/her family can contribute to the student's education the following academic year. To qualify for the Bonner Leaders Program, a student's EFC should not exceed $7,500.

  There are 10 scholarships available. These 10 students will move through the program as a cohort. We are looking for a diverse class - a nice mix of experiences, geographic location, gender, ethnic background, etc. I have attached an application, which is due Friday, June 3.
